Understanding your trading charges

For a fuller explanation of every charge below — with worked examples — see Trading Charges Explained: STT, GST, Stamp Duty & Every Fee on Your Trade.

What is brokerage?

Brokerage is the fee your broker charges for executing a trade on your behalf. Unlike the other charges on this page, brokerage is set entirely by each broker — some charge zero brokerage on equity delivery, others charge a flat fee per order, and some charge a small percentage of the trade value. It's the one line item where your choice of broker actually changes the outcome.

What is STT (Securities Transaction Tax)?

STT is a tax levied by the Government of India on every securities transaction executed on a recognised stock exchange. The rate depends on what you're trading — delivery, intraday, futures, or options — and which side of the trade (buy or sell) it applies to. It's identical across every broker, since it's set by law, not by brokers.

Exchange transaction charges & SEBI turnover fees

NSE and BSE each charge a small transaction fee on every trade that passes through their exchange, and SEBI (the market regulator) charges a tiny turnover fee on top. Both are set at the exchange/regulator level, so — like STT — they don't change based on which broker you use, only based on which exchange and segment you're trading in.

What is stamp duty on stock trades?

Stamp duty is a tax on the transfer of securities, charged on the buy side of a trade. Contrary to popular belief, it hasn't varied by state since a July 2020 amendment centralised the rate nationwide — every trader in India pays the same stamp duty rate for a given trade type, regardless of their home state.

GST on trading charges

GST (Goods and Services Tax) at 18% is charged on the brokerage and exchange transaction charges — the two charges that count as a "service" being sold to you. It doesn't apply to STT, SEBI fees, or stamp duty, since those are taxes rather than services.

DP (Depository Participant) charges

When you sell shares you're holding in your demat account, your broker (acting as your Depository Participant) charges a small fee for moving those shares out — separate from brokerage. This only applies to delivery sells; it doesn't apply to intraday or F&O trades, since those never involve shares actually entering or leaving your demat account.

Frequently asked questions

What is a brokerage calculator and how accurate is this one?

A brokerage calculator estimates every charge a broker and the government levy on a trade — brokerage, STT, exchange transaction charges, SEBI fees, stamp duty, GST, and DP charges — so you can see your real net profit or loss instead of just the raw price difference. This calculator uses each broker's current officially published brokerage rates and the current government-set STT, exchange, SEBI, and stamp duty rates, but brokers do change their pricing over time, so always confirm the final figure on your broker's own contract note.

Why do my charges differ from what my broker shows in the contract note?

Small differences can come from rounding, from a broker running a temporary promotional discount not reflected in their standard published rate card, or from exchange transaction charges being revised between when this page was last updated and when you traded. This calculator is meant for comparison and estimation, not as a substitute for your broker's contract note.

Does stamp duty really not vary by state?

Correct — as of a July 2020 amendment to the Indian Stamp Act, stamp duty on securities transactions is a single, centrally fixed rate applied the same way to every trader in India, regardless of which state they live in. Only the collected revenue is subsequently divided among states based on the buyer's registered address; the rate you actually pay never changes by state.

What's the difference between STT on delivery vs intraday vs F&O?

STT (Securities Transaction Tax) applies at different rates depending on the trade type: equity delivery is taxed on both the buy and sell side, while intraday equity, futures, and options are taxed only on the sell side (options STT applies to the premium value, not the underlying value). The rates themselves are also different across these categories and have changed in recent budgets, particularly for futures and options.

Are DP charges applicable on every sell trade?

No — DP (Depository Participant) charges only apply when you sell shares that were held in your demat account as a delivery holding. They don't apply to intraday trades (since no shares actually move into or out of your demat account) or to F&O trades (which settle in cash, not by delivery of shares).
