  • Referral terms: the site owner's supplied figure (~₹300/account + 20% brokerage commission for 12 months) was NOT independently confirmed against an official Upstox page during this research — Upstox's own consumer refer-and-earn page currently describes voucher rewards rather than that structure, which may instead belong to Upstox's separate Authorized Partner/referral-agent program. Confirm the actual terms of whichever partner agreement is used before relying on this figure. `referralUrl` remains a placeholder either way.

About Upstox

Parent company
RKSV Securities India Private Limited

Upstox traces back to RKSV Securities, founded in 2009 by brothers Ravi Kumar and Raghu Kumar along with Shrini Viswanath; Kavitha Subramanian joined as a co-founder in 2016. RKSV opened its retail brokerage arm to the public in 2012 under the Upstox brand, which is what most investors know the company as today — Upstox's own site instead marks 2010 as when its operating entity, Upstox Securities Pvt. Ltd. (a wholly owned subsidiary of RKSV Securities India Private Limited), received its trading license. It's headquartered in Mumbai.

Upstox is one of the more widely recognized discount brokers in India in part because of Ratan Tata's early backing: he invested roughly $200,000 in 2016 for about a 1.33% stake, an investment business press reported he later partially cashed out via a 2024 share buyback at a reported return of around 23,000x on that partial stake — a well-covered story that gives Upstox a level of brand recognition many discount brokers on this list don't have.

By active NSE client count, Upstox is generally ranked the 4th-largest broker in India — behind Groww, Zerodha, and Angel One — with the top four discount brokers together holding roughly 63% of the market as of FY25. Upstox itself reported around 2.75 million (27.5 lakh) active clients for FY25, a real and substantial user base, even if smaller than the three brokers immediately ahead of it.

Upstox's charge structure

This calculator models Upstox's confirmed rate card, re-verified directly against upstox.com/brokerage-charges/: a flat ₹20 per order on equity delivery, 0.1% of trade value or ₹20 per order (whichever is lower) on intraday, 0.05% or ₹20 (whichever is lower) on futures, and a flat ₹20 per order on options — brokerage is capped at ₹20 per order across every equity segment. DP charge is ₹20 + 18% GST (₹23.60) per scrip per day on delivery sells, confirmed directly from Upstox's own help-center article. Account opening is free, and AMC is ₹0 for newly onboarded customers in their first year (₹300 + GST per year thereafter for non-BSDA accounts, not modeled here). Mutual funds and IPOs carry ₹0 brokerage.

Upstox: pros & cons

Pros

  • Backed by Ratan Tata since 2016, giving Upstox a level of brand recognition and public trust signal that most discount brokers on this list don't carry.
  • One of India's top 4 brokers by active NSE clients (around 2.75 million/27.5 lakh as of FY25) — real scale and platform liquidity, even though it trails Groww, Zerodha, and Angel One.
  • Simple, capped fee structure: brokerage never exceeds ₹20 per order on any equity segment, and mutual funds/IPOs are ₹0 brokerage.
  • ₹0 account opening and ₹0 AMC in the first year for newly onboarded customers, confirmed directly from Upstox's own pricing page.

Cons

  • Unlike Zerodha or Dhan, Upstox charges a flat ₹20 per order on equity delivery rather than ₹0 — delivery-focused investors have cheaper options elsewhere on this list.
  • DP charge of ₹20 + GST (₹23.60) per scrip is on the higher end of brokers compared here, versus Dhan's ₹14.75 or Zerodha's ₹15.34.
  • AMC reverts to ₹300 + GST per year after the first year for non-BSDA accounts — not a permanent ₹0, unlike some competitors' AMC-free structures.
  • Upstox's own consumer refer-and-earn program is currently structured around vouchers rather than a clearly stated flat cash reward, in contrast to more straightforwardly disclosed referral terms from some competitors on this list.

  5. 5Once verified, your trading and demat account is activated at no account-opening charge, confirmed ₹0 directly from Upstox's own pricing page.

Is Upstox backed by Ratan Tata?

Yes — Ratan Tata invested roughly $200,000 in Upstox in 2016 for about a 1.33% stake. Business press reported he partially exited that position via a 2024 share buyback at a reported return of around 23,000x on the portion sold, a widely covered story in Indian business media.

What are Upstox's DP charges?
